Travel - Money Saving Tips-
Join a cashback or rewards websiteThese websites give you either
cash or rewards for shopping (mostly online) with their affiliated partners,
filling out surveys and clicking on ads. You can be rewarded when you book
flights with webjet, jetstar, Virgin and multitudes of other online travel
companies. Your reward points can then be converted to cash or rewards
depending on the program you have signed up to. See our reviews of different
rewards websites
here.
Choose the right credit/debit card -Apart from the usual checks you should carry out with a credit card ie. Annual
fee, interest rates and interest fee period you should also check the currency
conversion fee, usually about 2.5% of what you spend. If you plan to use your
credit/debit card to withdraw cash, it is also worth finding out if your bank
has any partnerships with foreign banks as you may be able to save on the
transaction fee if you use their partner ATMs. If you cannot avoid the ATM
transaction fee, try to withdraw more money in one go. This will only help if
the transaction fee is a set price rather than a percentage price, so check with
your bank before you go. If you are withdrawing using a credit card, be aware
that credit cards will usually start to charge interest instantly on cash
withdrawn, so this should be avoided.
Shop around for Travel insuranceTravel Agents often charge huge fees for travel insurance so you should
definitely shop around. If you travel a lot, you may be better off getting a
yearly travel insurance policy rather than a single trip, or if you have a
family it is almost always best to find a family policy. Try these reputable
online insurance providers to find the beast deal for you
1cover Travel Insurance
,
Travel Insurance Direct,
DUinsure, etc. If you
are getting a yearly policy, limit the number of countries it applies to if you
aren’t going to travel to all of them, particularly the US, as their health
costs are astronomical.
Travel off peak Try and take your holidays outside of school holidays if at all possible, if you
have school aged children, look at taking them out of school a day early, you
may be able to save a lot of money on flights by leaving before the rush. Sign
up to online newsletters and keep up to date with the latest deals and you can
also find travel websites that find the cheapest current deals for you. You can
also choose your destination carefully to reduce costs. You can get cheaper
flights to the South Pacific Islands from the East Coast of Australia and
alternatively, flights will be cheaper to Asia from the West Coast. It may even
be cheaper to find a cheap domestic flight from one city to another before
embarking on your international flight.
Buy a discount CardIf you stay in a lot of hotels it may be worth buying a hotel discount card such
as the
Priority privilege card. These give you a range of discounts on
different hotels as well as discounts on meals. They also usually have a bonus
that will pay for the card, such as buy one night, get one free. You can also
buy a card to get you access to all airport lounges, which can be a
lifesaver on long haul flights as well as those airports that don't have the
specific lounge your are affiliated with, see
Priority Pass
Find an International Phone CardUsing an international phone card can cut your phone costs buy up to 90% on
using a normal phone. Use a website like phonecard choice to find and compare
prices on the multitude of cards out there. If you can’t get one before you
travel, just look for an internet café and they will usually sell them.
Shop around for CurrencyYou should shop around for currency, as it is more than likely your local bank
won’t give you a great deal, and you are even less likely to get a good deal if
you wait until you get to the airport. Try using your online bank account as
they may do a better deal.
